Are there drug-free psychedelic experiences?

A recent study published in the journalĀ Frontiers in Psychology explores what they term “spontaneous spiritual awakenings”.

These experiences, characterized by sudden feelings of oneness with the universe, unity, and/or revelatory understanding of life, are quite similar to the way people describe psychedelic experiences. But despite many anecdotal accounts of such experience, mainstream science has yet to really explore them. To date, these spontaneous spiritual awakenings are usually pathologized by doctors who link them to conditions like schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

The paper’s author, Jessica Corneille, explains, “My primary inspiration and motivation is to help destigmatize, depathologize, and raise awareness around spontaneous spiritual awakenings by engaging in rigorous scientific research”.
