Australia legalizes psilocybin and MDMA for therapeutic use

Australia has officially become the first country to formally recognize psychedelics as medicine. Starting in July this year, therapeutic use of MDMA and psilocybin will be legal when prescribed by a psychiatrist for treatment of certain mental health conditions.

“Prescribing will be limited to psychiatrists, given their specialised qualifications and expertise to diagnose and treat patients with serious mental health conditions,” reads a statement from the country’s Therapeutic Goods Administration.

Under these new guidelines, psychiatrists will be able to prescribe MDMA to help treat PTSD, and psilocybin for Treatment Resistant Depression. All other uses will still be considered illegal.
