A ‘Bad Trip’ can lead to positive mental health outcomes

A new study from Ohio State University suggests that psychedelic drug experiences which are more mystical may lead to a greater reduction in anxiety and depression symptoms. The research also suggests that experience people described as frightening or destabilizing can also have beneficial results.

Researchers hope these insights will be useful to practitioners guiding participants through current clinical trials, and eventually patients. Senior author of the study Alan Davis explains:

“Sometimes the challenge arises because it’s an intensely mystical and insightful experience that can, in and of itself, be challenging. In the clinical research setting, folks are doing everything they can to create a safe and supportive environment. But when challenges do come up, it’s important to better understand that challenging experiences can actually be related to positive outcomes.”
