Exercise for mental health

A recently published analysis of meta-studies has found that exercise can help improve symptoms of depression, anxiety, and emotional distress. High-intensity exercise was found to be the most effective, with positive outcomes observed after less than 12 weeks of treatment.

In the study, which included 97 randomized controlled trial reviews, physical activity was found to have greater benefits on depression, anxiety, and psychological distress than other forms of care. In all populations, adding physical exercise had a favourable impact on depression, anxiety, and psychological stress. Treatment was especially effective for people with depression, or who had been diagnosed with HIV or kidney disease.

While all forms of activity included saw some benefit, including walking, pilates, and yoga, high-intensity exercise was found to be the most effective.
