How does DMT affect the brain?

A new study has produced detailed brain imaging that seeks to answer a key question about psychedelics: how does DMT affect the brain?

Researchers at the Imperial College London are looking into the effects of DMT (dimethyltryptamine).  They used detailed brain imaging data from 20 volunteers to examine the psychedelic’s effects on how the brain functions.

The study results were published in the journal PNAS. They showed an increase in connectivity in the brain, particularly in areas associated with high-level functions like imagination.

Unlike other psychedelics, these effects are relatively brief, only lasting a few minutes. Following this study, the research team is looking at ways to extend these effects through continuous IV infusion.
