Is psilocybin safe for people with bipolar disorder?

In a new study published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology, researchers examined the impacts of psilocybin among people living with bipolar disorder.

The results were mixed. Some participants found the experience helpful, but there were also reports of adverse reactions such as an increase in manic symptoms.

While psilocybin has been shown to be useful in treating depression, this is the first study looking specifically at how it affects bipolar disorder. The study represents a first step in investigating how (or if) psilocybin can be used for these patients. Study author Emma Morton explains:

“Before we run clinical trials to investigate the effectiveness of psilocybin for people with bipolar disorder, we need to know whether it’s safe for them to use, as some medications which have a similar neurobiological mechanism of action can trigger manic episodes”
