Psychedelic couple’s therapy

Psychedelics, particularly MDMA, have the potential to revolutionize couple’s therapy.

In the words of Albert Garcia-Romeu, assistant professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Johns Hopkins Medicine, “There’s a lot of neurobiological reasons to think that this drug would be helpful for couples therapy.”

MDMA helps quiet parts of the brain that respond to stress while encouraging the release of oxytocin and other hormones associated with bonding. According to Garcia-Romeu, this can make people “feel more emotionally open and empathetic and less triggered by threats or difficult emotional states”.

The emerging mental-health practice is currently only available in the DIY sense, but may be available in therapists offices in the near future. Proponents for psychedelic medicine are looking forward to the FDA approving MDMA as a treatment for PTSD within two years; ideally, applications for other conditions would follow soon after.
