Should psychedelic therapists try psychedelics?

Historically, it’s been seen as helpful for psychotherapists to experience the therapeutic models they provide to patients. Experiential learning experiences have been thought to increase potential for empathy and understanding of patients, as well as a greater mastery of the therapeutic techniques that may be more difficult to conceptualize theoretically.

With this in mind, the increasing interest in psychedelic therapy poses an interesting question: should psychedelic therapists have personal experience using psychedelics?

Some say yes, reasoning that it would be very difficult for a therapist to guide a patient through something they don’t fully understand. Others caution that the risks of widespread use of psychedelics among therapists outweigh the benefits, cautioning that psychedelic use could lead to a positive bias for that form of treatment.
